People experience stress in different ways. Thus we can not generalize when giving advice on how to identify stress in others. However, it usually manifests itself one way or another. It is important to identify stress-related problems as early as possible and take some actions before serious stress-related illness occurs. Prolonged stress makes people ill and can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, weakens our immune system, IBS, diabetes, allergies, muscle and joint pain, other serious illnesses.
What can stress look like? Body symptoms: headaches, back pain, chest pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, decreased immunity, frequent colds, skin complaints, indigestion, sleep problems, stomach problems. Emotional symptoms: moodiness, anxiety, worrying, panic, restlessness, depression, irritability, anger, feeling insecure, sadness, burnout, lack of focus, forgetfulness, sexual issues. Behavioural symptoms: over-eating, under-eating, drug or alcohol abuse, increase smoking and caffeine, angry outbursts, crying spells, social withdrawal, conflicts, loss of sense of humour. Cognitive symptoms: memory problems, poor judgment, inability to concentrate, ‘brain fog’, indecision, self-doubt.
